The history of hot stone dates back over 5,000 years ago. Healers collected rocks from riverbeds and placed them on top of coals or within warmed water and used them to massage over the body to relieve discomfort, pain and restore one’s prana (life force) through energy pathways via stone placements on the body. Sweat lodges used water to pour over hot stones to aid in restoration through detoxifying and purification rituals. Many of these methods also used herbs, flowers and crystals during these ceremonies.
Basalt stones are naturally formed as lava cools from volcano eruptions that journey down to the sea becoming smoothed by ocean waves over time. These basalt stones are used throughout the hot stone treatment.
Marble stones used in cold stone therapy are formed when sedimentary limestone is heated & pressed causing granules of calcite and colored mica to crystalize. Cold stone therapy is applied to help reduce redness, sinus congestion, muscular injuries, and tension headaches.
